Scenes: Other sections: |
The vigil candle, hung next to the tabernacle, signals the presence of the Lord. It's lit any time the tabernacle is not empty. That only happens just before Easter, when the Eucharist is removed. The tradition of the vigil candle goes back to Exodus 27:20-21, where an oil lamp was to be lit outside Ark of the (old) Covenant. Today, we still keep a light burning near the tabernacle of the New Covenant (Hebrews 8; Luke 22:20).
