The tabernacle, always visible near the altar, contains the Blessed Sacrament.

Though its appearance and location with respect to the altar has only been the rule for the last few hundred years, the tradition had always been to store the Blessed Sacrament securely in a vessel consistent with the value of its contents.

Across the top of the tabernacle are these words from the Tantum Ergo by St. Thomas Aquinas: "The world cannot contain love without Thee"
