The stations of the cross (or "the way of the cross") are a meditation on the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.

The events chosen are a matter of church tradition, and have varied in number over the centuries. Most of the stations recognized today are taken directly from the Bible; other stations are from other writings and legends.

The stations in the main church upstairs are all carved from wood, framed in a crooked cross, and posted high on the wall -- all very reminiscent of the way Christ was crucified on, yet exalted through, His cross. They're carved in such relief that they almost seem like statues, as seen in this oblique angle of the tenth station:

The first station: Jesus is condemned to die (Matthew 27:3,26; Mark 15:15; Luke 23:23-24; John 19:16)
