The stations of the cross (or "the way of the cross") are a meditation on the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.

The events chosen are a matter of church tradition, and have varied in number over the centuries. Most of the stations recognized today are taken directly from the Bible; other stations are from other writings and legends.

The first station: Jesus is condemned to die (Matthew 27:3,26; Mark 15:15; Luke 23:23-24; John 19:16)
