There is a monstrance, or "ostensorium" at the west end of the lower church. A monstrance is just a richly decorated container made to display what it contains. In ages past, one would place a relic from a saint in a monstrance. These days, only the Blessed Sacrament -- the Sacred Host -- is so honored during benediction and on Holy Thursday.

The tradition of exhibiting the Blessed Sacrament this way goes back hundreds of years in the Catholic Church. It's frequently sized to contain just one or a few Hosts, and usually has gold or brass rods radiating from it.
