The ambo is just the pulpit from which the celebrant (priest) or lector proclaims the Scriptures, and the celebrant or appointee gives homilies.

Ambos are elevated not to glorify the reader, but rather to make the Scriptures visible and audible to the whole congregation (Isaiah 40:9 and Matthew 5:2).
