History: Other sections: |
While the women's efforts were organized through the Altar and Rosary Society, the men of the parish helped as ushers and councilmen - four men served in this capacity each year. These men were available to the pastor for advice and helped recruit men to erect booths, run wheels at bazaars, take tickets at the picnics, and help in other activities. Although several attempts were made to organize a society for men, none was permanent until a group of men organized in May 1929. On November 22, 1931, the men were inducted into the Holy Name Society, although for years they would be known as the Calvey Club. Before this, men of the parish had sponsored their first "smoker" as a fund raiser for the parish in 1927. Working with the Cleveland Athletic Club they arranged for a set of amateur boxing matches, which were held in the church basement. There was always some other form of entertainment - a dance or a comedian - to conclude the evening. These continued annually until World War II when they ended for "lack of talent." The establishment of a parish branch of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in 1928 grew out of Fr. Calvey's great concern for the poor. At first there were only officers; membership would not be open to the parish for a couple of months. The first collection for their work was on January 27, 1929. The Society would be a great help to the pastor during the coming Depression. |
